The demand for more economical methods of construction and for increased capacity from structures in terms of minimisation of storey heights has led to the popularity of flat slabs which are not supported by downstand beams or walls but by columns. However the risk of punching failure has a direct impact on the permissible slab thickness when supported by columns only.

Options available to engineers when attempting to avoid this problem include improving concrete quality; increasing reinforcement content; using enlarged column heads etc. All of these options will succeed in preventing punching failure, however Schöck have developed a far more cost & time effective solution called Schöck BOLE® stud rail reinforcement system. The stud rail reinforcement which is installed in a radial pattern around the column head consists of double headed studs welded to two spacer rods ensuring exact spacing and optimum force absorption in comparison to conventional solutions such as hoops.
